The course of Diploma in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) provides the learners with the fundamentals to the theories and approaches in English language education from various perspectives of the field. The course covers the core theories to equip learners with the ability to successfully conduct lessons of English for learners of other languages. This course is designed from the backward paradigm in combination with outcome-based education (OBE) to foster the empirical performance in ELT arena upon the completion of the course. In addition to in-class teacher training, learners are provided with the opportunities to empower their autonomy and further knowledge via guided self-study. The internship is the last stage of the course to establish the empirical context for real-world practice.
- 18 years of age
- High school diploma or the equivalent
- If English is not your first language, you must have an intermediate or higher level of English proficiency (B1 level, according to the CEFR, the Common European Framework Reference for Language) which is a score of approximately 5.0 on the IELTS test or 550 on the TOEIC test.
Upon the completion of the course, learners will be able to:
- Understand the fundamental theories in first and second language acquisition that influence the effectiveness of teaching
- Identify the characteristics of learners and teachers to bridge the gap of stakeholders in the classroom
- Apply the current approaches and methods to design a successful lesson plan with the necessary components and instruments to achieve the expected learning outcomes
- Implement the lessons of both receptive and productive skills with satisfactory levels in integration of language constructions
- Evaluate learners’ performance and propose strategies to enhance their levels
- Develop certain strategies and principles to enhance learners’ autonomy and engagement in classroom activities
- Manage the classroom sequence with appropriate responses to possible issues to maintain the class atmosphere
- Establish the ethical values among pre-service teachers and foster the sense of responsibility in language education

More infomationThis module aims to provide learners with the fundamental knowledge of core theories and approaches in language education. The course will assist learners with strategies to explore learners’ characteristics that shape the teaching activities. The course also targets fostering learners’ ability to understand the elements of teaching language constructions and skills.
The module aims to provide learners with the intensive understanding and mastery of theories underlying lesson planning and syllabus design, from which learners are able to build and sharpen their skills in effectively developing lesson plans, using teaching materials, and implementing testing and assessment.
The module aims to provide opportunities for students to demonstrate competencies built and developed through two previous modules regarding the Theory and English teaching methods, typical of which is the ability to design lessons and prepare lesson plans, to conduct teaching in the classroom, and to organize teaching activities.
Learners will be provided with a wide range of materials and resources on the Learning Management System (LMS) with quizzes for further exploration of knowledge.
Learners will be provided the opportunities to observe the real class with PTG partners and conduct a 30-hour internship with the assistance of supervisors.
